Tropicals come inside for the winter
I ’m not much of a houseplant person during the quick part of the year . In fact , virtually all my sign plants spend the summer outside on the terrace , where they ’re easy to wish for and where they enjoy the redundant light . But come winter and freeze temperatures , there is a aggregative migration of plants inside . I love being surround by fleeceable all winter !
banana tree ! The huge plant life here is a Japanese fiber banana ( Musa basjoo ) , which is really one of the hardiest of banana . It will winter outdoors in Zone 6 , and maybe even Zone 5 if you give it full winter auspices . But I like it as a houseplant , and it has done wonderfully indoors , not minding the low light at all . The only trouble is that I live with cats , and theylovechewing on the leaves . you may see the damage on the leaf hanging down on the right side of this characterization . as luck would have it , it is nontoxic to cat-o'-nine-tails and large enough that they ca n’t possibly chew on all of it .
Aloe verais a classic houseplant , but it also boom for me outside in nearly full sun all summertime . The redundant Dominicus facilitate it bulk up to a bigger , more spectacular plant quickly .

Mangaves are cross between American aloe and the unusual genusManfreda . The result are plant life that face a flock like agaves but do n’t have the vicious spines and that are right smart more tolerant of wet conditions during the summer . ThisMangave‘Lavender Lady ’ looked lovely on my patio all summertime and now is attend out on the windowsill for the wintertime .
own houseplants with cats that like chewing on leaves means finding affair they ’ll leave alone and that are non-poisonous . These industrial plant are all non-poisonous and not very sympathetic to cats and have done heavy as houseplants . At the top isPeperomia obtusifolia‘Variegata ’ , at the bottom is a cast - atomic number 26 plant ( cast-iron plant elatior ) , and there are a mates of orchid mix in as well .
I ’m not a great orchid grower . Occasionally I buy some brassy moth orchids ( Phalaenopsis ) in bloom , and when they stop flowering , I stick them alfresco on the patio in a shady speckle and block about them . surprisingly , that treatment often results in reblooming ! I ’m sure I ’d get more if I fertilized and repotted , but I ’m very glad with this !
