Every year , I grow works that I have grown before which I really like – and each year I try novel plant . I make a leaning in my garden notebook so I know what I grow each time of year and also the source of the seeds ; I also note sow date , germination escort and if I am together enough , date of transplantation . That room I can refer back , if I do not retrieve the plant or source the following year . Right now I am bet at catalogue and ordering seed and commemorate last year ’s garden bounty . Here are three plants which I grow last class that I will be sure to uprise again this twelvemonth .

Like most gardeners , I sow some of my own seeds , and I have and business deal plants with friends and buy some too . This is part of the joy of horticulture – sharing with others – passalong plants and inspiration . Every twelvemonth , my gardening friend Deborah Hall start enough seed to leave for more than a few of us . By mid - spring her back porch pack of cards is imposingly covered with flats of Green River and brassicas , alliums and more , expect transplantation .

Last year , she turn ‘ Scarlet Frills ’ table mustard ( Brassica juncea)and we both be intimate it for many reasonableness . First off , flora with red leaves attract to gardeners visually because of their contrast in the garden . This flora produce easy from seed and grant to cum source , Johnny ’s Selected Seeds , sister leaves are ready to exhaust in just 21 day , with full - size leaves ready in only 37 days . The leaves are thin and ruffly and are juicy – they add zest to green salads , are colorful and tasty when chop up and supply to grain or pasta salad and even egg salad , and are also good on sandwiches in lieu of lettuce . Plants were heat resistant in the hot weather and cold tolerant in the fall garden when covered with row back to avert frost . I will defintely sow seed for ‘ Scarlet flounce ’ , product # 2530,www.johnnyseeds.com .

Another closeby neighbor is Denise Sharp of Sharp Farm , who has greenhouses and grows all variety of herb , veg and flowers for the community as well as nursery - related businesses and restaurants in the Baltimore - Washington area ( www.sharpfarm.com ) . She leave me with an variety of works so I can hear lots of heirloom tomato , peppers , aubergine and interesting new thing . Well , I ’ve lie with about long beans for a long time , however I always thought that they ’d get big and baffling rapidly , so never adjudicate them . So I convey six ‘ Bhagavadgita ’ pole bean plants home from her one day and planted them and allow me state you , I had noodle galore for weeks !

Not only did they get massively , the beans were easier and quicker to find fault and stay pinnace for foresighted than the ordinary unripened bean . My attic range from about 15 to 25 - inches in duration ! You do need a tall , hardy treillage to grow these beans on , and since they are a subtropical Asiatic specialty , they prefer affectionate days and nights . According to Johnny ’s web site , ‘ Gita ’   ( Vigna unguiculata),ID # 2619   matures in 78 day . bean that I miss harvesting and were leave too long on the vine , I leave to dry and then beat them and left them out to entirely dry out and have used them in edible bean soup this wintertime . I also saved some to hear and plant .

My third plant that I need to be trusted and grow again is ‘ Wasabi ’ Arugula ( Diplotaxis erucoides ) from Renee ’s Garden Seeds . Renee must like arugula as much as I do ; she offers six different sort of arugula seminal fluid for sale ( www.reneesgardenseed.com ) . ‘ Italian ’ , ‘ Runway ’ and ‘ True Italian ’ are allEruca sativa , while ‘ Rustic ’ and ‘ Rustic - Style ’ areDiplotaxis tenuifolia . In the past , I have grow three of them , so this year I decided to just go ahead and order all six of them and arise them out in beds next to one another so I can do a industrial plant and savor comparison . ( I ’ll be sure to blog on that down the line ! )

I find ‘ Wasabi ’ rocket salad to be a robust and weather tolerant flora . The flavor of this unique Italian native is pungent like wasabi in both flavor and heat . In outflow the leaves are n’t quite as hot . To harvest , I cut declamatory out leaves or cut the entire plant back about an inch aboveground ; it will produce back . Once the weather becomes blistering , the leave also become hotter . I cut them back before their snowy flowers appear and I kept this plant going under row cover until December in my geographical zone 7 garden .

I hope that I have inspired you to try something fresh in this year ’s garden . Next web log , I will tell you why you need to try Pisces capsicum , so stay tuned !
