The joy of growing your own greens
Intellectually , I know that horticulture come with its fair part of bugs , pestilence and creepy crawlies . But knowing this and take on such creatures in my dejeuner are two very dissimilar matter .
The first springiness I grewlettuce and spinachin my raised bed garden was an exciting year . Unlimited fresh putting green seemed like a fantastic way to spare some money and feed my family healthy sides . Plus , a perquisite of planting leaf lettuce is that you may seed it early in the time of year , and it grows quickly . Within a calendar month , it ’s ready to harvest , and if you just tailor off the leafy top , you have unlimited salad greens all bound if you do n’t allow it go to seed .
The first few salad bowls were a celebration of what a fantastic gardener I was . Was it fresher than foodstuff lettuce?Definitely . Greener?Of course . Tastier?Duh .

Several weeks later , the novelty had worn off for the kids . They were equally brainsick of salad and of me bragging that I ’d maturate it with my own two hands . Honestly , the novelty was wearing off for me as well . Every time I went to the garden , it begin to feel like a real “ fishes and loaves ” place . disbelievingly , as quick as I was harvesting the lettuce , it was growing back fuller and thicker . I could feed my entire neighborhood with the absurd amount I was growing .
Then came the black day that would swear me off garden lettuce for the respite of the season . I cut , washed and put the clams in the salad spinner for a summertime dejeuner . Cucumber , cherry love apple , high mallow , carrots and croutons went into the pipe bowl . I had take about three bites when , out of the nook of my middle , I noticed something that did n’t seem like any of the toppings I had added to my salad . Slowly , I change by reversal over the forkful of greens I was about to put in my mouth , beg it was n’t what it looked like it might be — a voluptuous garden biff .
I clamp my sass together to keep in the salad that threatened to get along mightily back up . Thegarden slugthat clung to my utensil may or may not have been flung across the kitchen as my bowl clack into the sink . It was a good 30 minute of arc before I could open my mouth without feel nauseated . And when my married man ask a few days by and by why I had n’t made salad latterly , I slow - wink at him until he back aside .

I eventually came back around to loving garden putting surface . But now I wash off much more soundly . And I tick off . Every . Single . Bite .
Jamie would be an splendid dissenter on The Amazing Race because she make out to have great travel adventure and is not afraid of tiptop . But she would never be the teammate who has to eat weird thing .
