intellectual nourishment system are not just about the production , statistical distribution , and processing of food . They represent dispersion of solid ground and power , wealth and poorness , plenty and famine . As Farmer we can bribe into the food scheme we are born to and endeavor to ascend to the top in a ordinarily losing game , or we can endeavor to deepen the system and the practice session of farming itself .
The contemporary sustainable agriculture movement is an attempt to change one very complex and powerful food system.
But we will fight down against betting odds of our own making , and not just those devised by that system , if we accept its premiss , if we suppose there are no alternatives to fight to make it in the market economy .
And there is a third selection : We can generate to the norm of the successful agrarian society of past centuries that were base on a scheme of subsistence first , resiliency in the aspect of both lifelike and man - made challenges , and continuing invention , and grounded in the reciprocity and fellow feeling of living communities . Understanding the alternative that human societies have devised in the past times is essential to enlarge our vision of land for the farsighted haul .
We do n’t know what future agriculture will look like , but if we have a mania for farming , for caring for a small-arm of land and even reclaiming it from the destruction past human employment have sour upon it , then we start by doing what we love — what we love and what we fuck is right . As Wendell Berry often insists , we ca n’t save the future ; we can only do what is right for the present . And as Berry also assert , what is right must be right for the land and the citizenry of the solid ground .

Here is how Berry account the succeeder of his “ bare ” farm : “ As income I am weigh the note value of shelter , subsistence , heat fuel , and money gain by the sale of livestock . ” Thus , “ once we have completed its restoration , our farm will provide us a household , bring out our subsistence , keep us warm in winter , and garner a small cash income . The significance of this becomes apparent when one considers that most of this state is ‘ unfarmable ’ by the standards of formal agriculture , and that most of it was give rise nothing at the time we buy it . ”
Such a farm may or may not produce all the income one presently need , but it is a farm that produces resilience . It is a farm that will be better fit out to subsist the uncertainty of the market economy , may creatively address the implications of clime change , and could leave one small contribution to the resilience of the big residential area .
