Pelargoniums , that ever popular bedding flora , can be propagated by film editing somewhat much twelvemonth round , although mid - saltation is the best time .
Although often treat as yearly in the UK , genus Pelargonium are in reality tender perennials . It ’s clip to bring any worthwhile specimen in from the cold for the winter . I keep mine on a shelf under the glasshouse staging , where they do n’t get too much light . They rarely need tearing , they ’ll just take care their own business there till early spring when they can be brought back into growing . But what if they do n’t survive the hibernation ? As an policy insurance policy ( but mostly because I ca n’t facilitate myself ) I have taken cuttings of some of my more attractive pellies . Here ’s what I did .

For the overwintering process , it helps to give the plant a substantial haircut , removing about two third of the growth , tidying aside any deadened or dying growth .
All that removed growth cater oodles of cutting material . For pellies , unforesightful staunch allegedly root quicker and more reliably than long stems . I cut the stem just below a leaf joint , then removed near all of the farewell and any other bits and composition , leaving as bare a root as possible .
The cutting does n’t need much leaf expanse , and would lose too much moisture anyway . Some of my cuttings ended up with just one teeny leaf . I hope that will be enough .

If I had any grit left I would have used my nonremittal thinning mixing , two part grit to one part vermiculite , but I have play out of grit . I used 100 % vermiculite on this function . I used a dibble to poke a gob in each mental faculty and eased the thinning in , one per module . I have not used any rooting hormone this time , I do n’t think they necessitate it .
I have put the module tray into the het workbench but have not covered them . Pelargonium do n’t apprise too much humidity , the leaves and stanch rot well . Even at this clock time of year they should root evenhandedly quickly , a few hebdomad .
My pelargonium alternative have not been very advanced in the past , I typically just buy them bum by the tray each spring . Not sure why I ’m bothering to propagate them ! Next year I design to raise to some more graceful pelargonium cultivars , then I will genuinely be protect my investment .

I ’ll be back with an update in a few week .
