When Maryellen Hockensmith bought her home in the hills look across Portland , she considered it the probability of a lifetime . The house was a honest jewel — a midcentury Modern designed by Pietro Belluschi , which appeals particularly to Maryellen ’s fiancé , Michael McCulloch , who is an designer . And the surrounding property was a pastoral 40 acres , literally — the former owner were sheep sodbuster , and the herd graze just yards from the back door .
Lee Kelly ’s carving , " windowpane to the Gone World , " at the entrance of this Portland , Oregon , garden provides the southern edge to the sculpted terraces . It also acts as a gateway to the wildest sections of the property , while meadowlike planting below soften its industrial , man - made edge , make it more of an alluring door . It is a preferred frolic area for children who care to walk through the opening . ( exposure by : Susan Seubert)SEE MORE photo OF THIS GARDEN
While for many the lack of an extensive garden would be a detriment , here it was a definite plus since the pastureland present fundamentally a blank ticket for a new design . Using their own ideas as a springboard , Maryellen and Mike assemble a “ dreaming team ” to pull it all together and make it happen . First came designer Beth Holland who had worked with Mike on an HGTV giveaway household , who then brought in Pacific Northwest garden guru and source Ann Lovejoy , keep an eye on by local Garden Diva , Laura Crockett . For flesh - out , Lovejoy telephone on Eamonn Hughes , and the batting order was unadulterated . Says Holland : “ We were just so happy to be together . It was really a consonant convergence of clients and designer . ”

A meet description since Maryellen and Mike have a inviolable ghostlike side , something they kept in mind throughout the process of build the garden . “ One of my personal goals with the garden was to give people a connexion with the Earth , ” says Maryellen . Which for Crockett is a wider green view than the usual app of that catchword : “ It ’s also about have a place feel like home plate , emotionally and physically . It ’s about ‘ feeding ’ humans with a healthy surround . ”
As the centerpiece and backbone for the new landscape painting , a terrace with a swim puddle ( heated via solar panels on the home roof ) , and a clean - lined pool household ( also referred to as the yoga star sign ) made of local Port Orford true cedar and designed by Mike , was sited in line with the menage . Near the pool , a sculpture by Lee Kelly gentle “ Window to the Gone World , ” plan as a “ golden rectangle ” just as the pocket billiards house is , offers a portal persuasion to the nearby woodland of Douglas firs , maples and cedars . Maryellen insist on salt weewee for the kitty because “ it has healing quality and it ’s comfortable for the body . ” Since installation , the pool theater has even been used by therapist and during Buddhist retreats , and Maryellen ’s two young children have , of row , enjoyed the syndicate .
The puddle terrace also serves to bisect the main garden , giving the landscape a dichotomy both in appearing and procedure . Above it , the garden seems to go forth from a boulder - strew hillside ; below , a hayfield carpets the slope . Maryellen even refers to the east side of the pool sign of the zodiac , with its quiet view of the woods , as the “ introspective side , ” conducive to yoga and speculation . The west side , front the upper garden and its outdoor - living quad , is the “ societal side . ”

And social it is , say Holland : “ Maryellen wanted to use the property in unexpected ways , to connect to the community , host benefit and concerts . ” ( The pool terrace even project in a yoga video . ) enounce Maryellen , “ Both Mike and I are terrible extroverts , and having the garden make mass jump at the chance to come over . ” One of Mike ’s design objectives was to comfortably conciliate at least 150 people . But as Maryellen points out , “ It ’s also a place that feels protect and surrounded by nature , where people feel well-to-do pouring their heart out . “
Critical to the upper garden was the positioning of the 1,000 or so scores of Molalla basalt bring in , opt by Mike for its striations , which add to the horizontal layering in the garden that Crockett order create “ restful spaces . ” The goal was to make it look like the boulders were “ break ” by natural forces and the entire area , which incorporate stone terraces among the boulder , simulates a fault argumentation . This include a visual waterway , design by Hughes , which appears to start as a “ spring ” at the top , is held by the pocket billiards and then derive to the lower meadowland . There is in fact a natural seep in the pasture , which Maryellen and Mike enhanced with a liner so there would be piss for animal like prairie wolf and wapiti , even in the wintertime .

Being wildlife well-disposed was fundamental . While many gardeners build up barriers to keep out critters , Maryellen and Mike are fenceless , opting for cervid - repellent flora rather than disrupt the movement of animal life through the belongings . They even set apart 19 Akko ( almost half their property ) as a conservation alleviation held in perpetuity by Three Rivers Land Conservancy . If some garden plant life get crunch on , “ it ’s just our donation , ” enounce Maryellen .
On the plant menu , birds and insect have a smorgasbord to take from for semen , Charles Edward Berry and nectar — coneflowers , blueberries , anise Hyssopus officinalis , yarrow , chokeberry , sunflower , bee balm , Perovskia , Ribes and goldenrod . And of course , lots of grasses ( Stipa gigantea , Nassella tenuissima ) , which bestow to the garden ’s status , in Maryellen ’s words , as “ the most kinetic garden in Oregon . ”
Creating the plant life inclination was a joint effort by Maryellen , Crockett and Lovejoy . Maryellen leaned toward a red-hot color palette of oranges and yellow ( which she shout “ aphrodisiacal ” ) , and her teammate poise that with nerveless purple and deep blues . Lovejoy ’s distinctive strategy : “ We bring down a lot of nurseries , look at picture books and powder magazine , then build a works pallet that is potential to flourish on the web site . The enquiry becomes , ‘ What garden wants to be made here ? ’ alternatively of ‘ How can I put my imprint on this land ? ’ I exercise toward organic garden design , the coming together of people , piazza and plants . ”

Each area of the garden has its own character , though people of colour and texture are echo for cohesiveness , and no ingredient was placed without purpose . To spotlight the computer architecture of the house , the unveiling is low - Francis Scott Key and bare ; behind the planetary house , as a stroll garden heads for the pool bench , the people of colour intensify and the works list increase . “ Mike would have been well-chosen with just three varieties , but Maryellen is a works geek and she want a liberal mix , ” enunciate Crockett . “ It was significant that both of them feel undecomposed . ”
And all of the very luxuriant landscape is maintain organically ( Maryellen belongs to a radical that call itself “ Trust Us , We ’re Organic ” ) , including the very productive edibles garden at the top of the hill . So fruitful is the bounty that Maryellen ( with her children as active participants ) on a regular basis bring the surfeit to local shelters .
