Tropaeolum , commonly called Nasturtium , is a genus of climbing , sometimes creeping , plant that have rattling ornamental value in terms of their heights and spreads , foliage and flower .
These rather unusual plants typically have a very retentive flower time of year , and their blossom come in an amazing variety of colours from polar blue to blazing red .

T. majus
“ I grow nasturtiums every year , ” says Gardener Hannah Reid .
“ I enjoy nasturtiums for their beautiful prime and leaf . An extra incentive is that the intact plant is eatable – flowers , foliage and seeds , which are amazing pickled ! ”
It is not to be confused with Genus Nasturtium whichencompasses Cress species .

T. majus
Nasturtiums are strange plant on several count :
Taxonomically there is a association to the abovementioned Cress because both Genus Tropaeolum ( ‘ Nasturtium ’ ) and Genus Nasturtium ( Cress ) pass under Order Brassicales , many of whose member are eatable and which have a tangy , peppery , or mordacious flavour , with Mustard probably being the ‘ top dog of the Family’.1Nasturtium ( water - cress ) . As it take place , Nasturtium flowers and leaves are edible and lend a piquant oomph to salad and even soup .

Though Nasturtiums are deciduous perennial , in most regions of the United Kingdom they are half - stout and are grow as annuals .

However , along the south - western seacoast and a few other region , several mixed bag can be grown as the perennial that they are ( though a few varieties , such asT. tuberosumandT. speciosum , can be turn as perennial in almost all part of the UK ) .
If you are golden enough to call a comparatively balmy realm dwelling , you could bring heavy delight to your garden by growing arguably the most ornamental of all climbers .
To begin with , the foliage is of a mellowed sea - green color .

The leaves are ornamental in their own right , being either lob , often deeply , or round and cuticle - molded .
The showy flowers come in hues of yellow , orange and crimson , but a few are in shades of gloomy and purple and some are also bi - coloured or vary .
To top it all off , Nasturtiums bloom for months on ending , many varieties are fragrant , and the flowers attract butterfly and hummingbird !

Habitat & Growing Conditions
Tropaeolum grow in the state of nature from south - eastern Mexico and Guatemala in the north to the tip of Patagonia in the south , excluding Brazil .
Some species grow at ALT in the alpine regions of the Andes while others grow in lowland coastal areas ; Chile is a particular centre of species diversity.2Tropaeolum majus . ( n.d . ) . What is mutual to all of them is that they are indifferent to soil – as they produce in ground ranging from average down to what can only be typically consider very misfortunate .

T. majus‘Black Velvet’
They are commonly found growing in full Sunday ; though their water needs are low they do best in damp filth .
The huge majority of Nasturtium species are frost - tender and are fearless ( only ) to Zone H3 .
A few metal money , though , are frost - hardy down to Zone H5 .

Planting
Most Nasturtiums are social climber that attain heights of about 3 m.
A few , such asT. speciosumandT. peregrinum , can make stature of up to 4 m.
An overgrown Nasturtium social climber along the wall of a house will impart a charming , country - bungalow effect to your urban habitation .
They will produce the same countryside appealingness when they climb up and lave over boundary walls and fences with next to no training .
The shorter , more finespun , Nasturtiums , for exampleT. azureum , are ideal to plant beside summer - house , especially when the walls are of latticework – then a few bloom and leafage will ‘ peek ’ inside .
Some Nasturtiums have a spread , bushy drug abuse . Examples includeT. majus‘Empress of India ’ andT. majus ‘ Chameleon ’ .
If grown in large planter these metal money will add great color and produce a delicious billowing effect by the patio or on the porch .
They can really be used to create border as well .
How To Grow Nasturtiums
genus Nasturtium cum of the spread , dog varieties , are widely uncommitted at nurseries and on-line computer storage .
In plus , seed of the more democratic climber , for exampleT. speciosum , are just as freely found .
Some , such asT. majus‘Chameleon ’ , are much harder to find .
Because species of this genus do not take well at all to transplanting , only a few varieties , such as the bushy , spreading potpourri , are usable as plant in container from a limited bit of garden centres .
If you already have a Nasturtium , you may be able to get new Nasturtiums for yourself and your friends .
Some species ego - germ very faithfully . you may often simply allow the flush wither and then reap the seed pod .
Plant Care
Most , if not all , Tropaeolum varieties can be grown faithfully from ( the rather large ) seeds .
One may as well add that they will just as reliably set about to wilt and wither if transpose .
Therefore , do not start these plant in pots for later transplanting though you may very much acquire and keep poor and circulate varieties in planters .
Besides being very transplanation - averse , these plants have yet another quirk .
They do best in poor filth ! The richer the stain , the more foliation they will produce at the disbursal of flowers .
A mix of gravel , deoxyephedrine , and grit with but a sprinkle of hommos or manure mixed in will be thoroughgoing though any previous soil will do .
grease pH hovering around impersonal is ideal though any pH from moderately acid to more or less alkaline will do mulct for most Tropaeolum varieties .
The one non - negotiable is that territory should drain very well .
These plants should be watered about twice a week , be it from the rains or the hosepipe .
When the dirt dries out , it is prison term to water them .
Younger plant postulate more regular tearing than established outside ones .
fend off fertilising Nasturtiums of any kind .
Nitrogen - high fertilizer especially should be deflect because it will spur ontogeny of foliage on an already leafy plant ; in turn , this will negatively affect the issue and size of blooms .
Indeed , even a balanced fertiliser would not be a smart estimation for Nasturtiums under most circumstances .
If you have spring up a Nasturtium as a perennial in the UK , then , if it is of a type that is dormant in wintertime and is not frost - hardy ( the majority of form ) , before long after the foliage have exuviate in autumn , you should spread a level of leaf mulch on the land above the root system .
absent it a couple of weeks after the last rime of winter .
Pruning
In general Nasturtiums do not need to be pruned as they are deciduous industrial plant ( assuming you could grow them as perennials and not as annual ) .
“ nasturtium are so vigorous that , unless you are happy for them to be rearing , you will need to cut back the stems , ” shares Horticultural Consultant Colin Skelly .
“ Just cut back halt to just above a leafage and your Nasturtium will gayly keep growing around whichever area you require clear . ”
In general , the bushy spread motley may be turn out back before long after the flowering time of year is over .
wax variety can be deadheaded to advance fresh flush .
Do n’t get caught out by the blossoming season and dormancy time of year of your Nasturtium variety ; keep in mind thatT. azureum , T austropurpureum , andT. tricolorare all dormant during the summer and bloom in wintertime and fountain .
Common Problems
Tropaeolum is an inherently tidy genus and is do it to stay spare of disease but the different varieties have vary susceptibleness to pestilence .
In general , the myopic Chilean climber are the most robust whileT. majusand its mixed bag are the least robust .
BothT. speciosumandT. peregrinummay be snipe by flea beetles and caterpillar with the former also a target for bean aphid and the latter for aphids .
T. majusand its cultivar are susceptible to black fly , flea beetles , and caterpillars , in addition to which a lesser threat is posed by slugs .
