Scenes from last summer
We ’re on Bainbridge Island , Washington , today , visiting with Katie Crain .
I was just looking through picture from the summertime and fall ( as one does this clock time of yr ) , and I thought I ’d institutionalise you some . A little about this garden : It ’s on Bainbridge Island , Washington , and is about six age old . The business firm was young mental synthesis , so it was bare dirt in 2016 . The garden is now about an Akko , though I keep expanding it ( of course ! ) . My last garden had more the feel of an Englishcottage garden , but here on the island , surrounded by nature , I ’ve found my style evolving to a morenaturalistic look . I ’m particularly interested these Day in detect how works grow together in the wild and using that to inhale my plantings of more ceremonious plant life . I am a moment of a plant collector and bonk the uncanny and unusual , but I also love the classics : roses , clematis , andpeonies . I have fun combine rare plants withcommon plants . I do n’t consider myself a garden interior decorator at all . My trick is to keep moving matter around until they “ work ” and there is effective colouration andtexturebalance throughout the garden .
In this lush garden planting , the grassesMiscanthussinensis‘Morning ‘ Light ’ ( Zones 4–9),Imperatacylindrica(Zones 5–9 ) , andAnemanthele lessoniana(Zones 8–10 ) dominate the foreground . Mixed in are the flowers ofEchinacea(Zones 5–9 ; not sure of the variety ) , ‘ Conca d’Or’lily ( Lilium‘Conca d‘Or ’ , Zones 4–8),Crocosmia‘Lucifer ’ ( zone 5–9 ) , andMonarda‘Raspberry Wine ’ ( zone 4–9 ) . The monarda have grown larger than they are “ supposed ” to because they are right under our infected drainpipe field .

The purple - crimson foliage ofRosaglauca(Zones 2–8 ) takes center phase here , joined by the apricot flowers ofRosa‘Lady of Shalott ’ . Unknown varieties ofJapanese iris(Iris ensata , Zones 5–10 ) andKniphofiaadd ashen and white-livered flowers respectively , while the shrubArgyrocytisus battandieri(Zones 7–10 ) blooms in the background .
Lilium‘Conca d’Or ’ looks absolutely brilliant withOenothera versicolor‘Lemon Sunset ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) . AMagnoliasiebolidii(Zones 6–8 ) is not in efflorescence but backs up the lily with leaf , while other flowers , including the undimmed red blooms ofPenstemon‘Red Riding Hood ’ ( zone 5–9 ) , show off in the background .
The beautiful lily-white flowers ofFrankliniaalatamaha(Zones 5–8 ) are backed up by the purpleLespedeza thumbergii’Gilbratar ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) .

Monarda‘Raspberry wine-coloured ’ is the star of this view at the consequence , need over from the peonies(Paeoniahybrids , Zones 3–8 ) that have finished florescence .
