From chickens to garden
Keith Irvine , in chilly Zone 3 in Canada , shared his gorgeous vegetable garden with us last calendar week ( Keith ’s Vegetable Garden ) , and today we ’re bring down a different incision of the garden .
TheJapanese Gardenwas built in the area where we had formerly heighten poulet . The original chicken coop is still stand and is now cover by climb Virginia creeper(Parthenocissus quinquefolia , Zones 3–9 ) and hops vines(Humuluslupulus , Zones 3–8 ) , forming the back boundary of the garden . A humble border of Barkman Concrete Roman Stack Stone defines the ledger entry to the garden . An overt pagoda forms the centralfocal detail . A internet of boardwalk provides a course through the pagoda and over a bridge to the back exit . Other Japanese element include a concrete lantern , Buddha , bamboo rails , and a beautiful granite bench have to me as a retreat natural endowment from my employer and coworkers .
lowly , but contributing to the theme in a major way , is this house that one of my daughter made for me to christen the garden . She say me it says “ Growth ” and “ Nature . ” I ca n’t recollect which is which .

This 2018 exposure is one of the upright plantings of thepotsadorning the deck under the pagoda .
I conceive this front entry pot from 2019 is probably the most appropriate that I have hail to fetch the theme . The planting consist of purple millet(Pennisetumglaucum , annual ) , ‘ Zinfandel ’ oxalis(Oxalisvulcanicola‘Zinfandel ’ , Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) , ‘ Angel Wings’senecio(Senecio candicans‘Angel Wings ’ , Zones 8–10 or as an annual ) and ‘ Ascot Rainbow ’ euphorbia(Euphorbia× martinii‘Ascot Rainbow ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , some of which are not on a regular basis available in our orbit .
I love how the scarlet - cerise roller impatiens(Impatienswalleriana , Zones 10–12 or as an yearly ) in this 2020 moss - basket planting pops against the motley foliage and rock’n’roll setting . We haul literally tons of rock to border two open position of this garden .

The early spring blush of Nipponese tree peonies(Paeoniahybrid , Zones 3–8 ) and fernleaf peony(Paeonia tenuifolia , Zones 3–8 ) are suddenly - lived but dramatic .
To me the “ almost bridge player - painted ” looking at of this Solomon ’s seal(Polygonatumodoratum‘Variegata ’ , Zones 3–8 ) is double-dyed for a Nipponese garden .
The white birch tree(Betulasp . , Zones 2–7 ) that I institute as a seedling near the pagoda is increase the spectre for thehostas , ferns , and Solomon ’s seal of approval and decreasingwateringneeds for all the pots .

This photo perfectly display the look that I am attempt to accomplish here . Foliage is almost only wrap up the abandoned chicken coop , with the 4 - inch bamboo rail on the boardwalk completing the Nipponese look . Unfortunately , aJapanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zones 5–9 ) to really top it off is not possible in ( barely Zone 3 ) Oxdrift , Ontario .
The back exit area has an surreptitious pond liner making a bog surface area , which the bridge crosses . The bog creates the thoroughgoing surround for the native cattails(Typha latifolia , Zones 3–10 ) on the left and the goatsbeard(Aruncus dioicus , Zones 3–8 ) and variegated sweetflag(Acoruscalamus‘Variegatus ’ , Zones 3–10 ) on the right .
