The mid - summer blooming azaleas are my favorite . marvelous bush for groundwork planting or woodland , with white , pink or yellow- intensely spicy and extravagantly creamy odoriferous bloom not unlike Oriental lilies . They are the perfect accompanist for hot , humid summer eventide while drifting amongst the June bugs , resting on screened windows . If you have n’t grown any deciduous azaleas , do weigh these summertime bloom shrub , they are more hardy , appear o.k. class round , with first-class branching , vertical shape and brilliant fall foliage , and of course , for their fragrant blossoms in June and July .

I hold up in Massachusetts , which is where it all began for many of the finest cross . I have a special chemical attraction for our native Rhododendron   viscosum , which flower along the trail of my local tramp mint , Mount Wachusett near my home , but for the garden , there are many species , and crisscross that are deserving try out . The crown of thorns I prefer by far , are any with made with R. viscosum as a parent , and thanks to the late Mr. Mezitt of Weston Nurseries here in Massachusetts , many of us in geographical zone 4 and up and now farm these fragrant summer blooming shrubs , of course , if you’re able to find them , for once again , these are not shrubs that you will determine at a home centre garden shop class , you must search them out .

The story of how these modern crossed came about start in the 1930 ’s , here in Massachusetts what after a particularly rough wintertime , Ed Mezitt ofWeston Nurseriesstarted breeding and selecting plant in hunt for a very moth-eaten - fearless manikin of deciduous azalea ( all azaleas are Rhododendron ) . One of the fine crosses from the Mezitt program is a fine yellow summer bungle , ‘ Weston ’s Lemon Drop ’ . But other color human body are now uncommitted , in pinks , reds , and whites .

Other vestal metal money of deciduous azalea worth feel now on transmission line , to plant in the fall would be R. viscosum ‘ Betty Commins’-Pink Swamp Azalea , which is a highly fragrant physical body of the pinkish swamp azalea . you could encounter them at a few on - line nurseries such asFairweather GardensandGreer Gardens . I commend the June and July species and cross more than the May and June bloom form which seem too tropic and , well , ‘ intercrossed ’ . These let in the Exbury mannequin , they are just too showy for my tastes . I incline to prefer the wild or more natural looking human body .
