How do you feel about food fights as entertainment? I’d be interested to hear your opinion.
In early July several thousand people evince up at an outdoor association football theatre of operations in Denver to throw over - advanced tomatoes at each other . The Tomato Battle , standardised to Spain’sLa Tomatina tomato jubilation , is an minute - long nutrient fight abide by by live music and a day of playfulness .
Events like these are held on weekend throughout the summer in cities across the country . It ’s estimated from 80,000 to 300,000 British pound sterling of tomatoes are used in each battle .
Am I a party pooper for consider this is a fearsome waste of time , food , and resources ? I finger it ’s out or keeping to book an result like this when hunger is such a press issue in our community .

As an organizer for the Plant a Row for the Hungry cause , I think it also send the wrong subject matter about the value of food in our culture .
I emailed Tomato Battle Colorado - founder Max Kraner asking how the event ’s preparation team rationalise wasting thousands of pounds of tomatoes at each event . He respond :
“ We thank you for your concerns . Hunger is a fear for everyone here at Tomato Battle . The tomatoes we use are past advanced ( crappy ) and damaged . These tomato are not comestible and were depart to be thrown out . We only employ love apple that are not provide to be trade in food market stores or even given to the athirst . If you would have been at the event and smell the tomato , you would realize why these can not be eaten . The tomato waste after the event is then compost . I go for this will advantageously educate everyone on tomatoes for Tomato Battle . ”

Even if the tomato plant are “ superfluous , bruise , retiring - ripe or unsalable goods ” as reported inThe Denver Postnewspaper , the tomatoes were shipped to Colorado from out - of - land farms in Arizona and California . That still seems like a waste of resources to me .
