It is May and I am bring towards a more tidy garden . If you have been reading here long you know I tend to embrace the less than neat and formal vogue of horticulture . The loose , wild bungalow gardenis more my affair .

Yet , I find I am craving a moment more order . I feel I can reach that with some fleeceable structure that will hold through wintertime , providing involvement when nothing is in blossom . I am not going for rigid , straight lines , so no worries on that score .
I love box ( Buxus ) and how versatile it can be . Many varieties , like Winter Gem , keep their greenish color through the wintertime and can be shaped into topiary .
Not only does a box hedgerow make for a touch of order to the garden without being too fussy , but it has the added welfare of being cervid - resistant .

Planting enough boxwood can get expensive very quickly if you require enough to make a nice hedge . So what is a budget - minded nurseryman to do ?
Take cuttings from an exist Turkish boxwood and circularize a ton of them .
Note : habituate only Turkish boxwood that are no longer patent . Also , expend box cultivars that do n’t have the nasty cat weewee scent . ( those are usually English boxwood that reek )

When to Take Boxwood Cuttings
A good clock time to begin Turkish boxwood press clipping is when you trim your boxwood bush in Spring . You will have twelve ( if not more ) cut to use from your trimming . ( many also cut back again in belated Summer , typically mid - Sept )
get going with a squeamish levelheaded box , this one befall to be in a container .
As you could see this Winter Gem Boxwood has saucy green growth . It is a bit more chartreuse in people of color than the previous growing .

The impertinent growth is perfect for cutting material .
How to take Box Cuttings to propagate
If you are just getting started you’re able to do like I am here , take a decent potted one to snip cuttings from .
New brilliant green growth will root quicker and easier than the old growth .
Use sharpprunersor a tongue and cut off a 4 to 6 - in newfangled growth stem from the Turkish boxwood plant . I habituate myprunersbut some claim this pinches the stem preventing rooting . you could take a sharp tongue after taking the cutting from the plant and re - slice if you wish .

Prepare boxwood cutting to root
I create a fresh spot for roots by nip / stripping the leaves off . This opens the stem a bit so I figure that is why I do n’t have trouble with using pruners in lieu of a crisp knife to take cutting .
filch the leaves off prevents too much damage to the fore as pulling them can strip a bit too much from the Earth’s surface of the cut . I am not always that measured and have not had issues yet but recollect you might like to know that .
Now that the leaves are removed dip the cuttings intorooting hormone(this is optional )

Place boxwood slips into potting medium
habituate a dauber of some sort ( I used a Sharpie back end ) to create a slot to place your cutting into your passel of soil ( I used my diy potting soil ) By create a hole in the soil you prevent the steady down endocrine from getting removed as you slue in the prow .
I place several slip into the tidy sum . This is a 3.5 - inch stool and I fit out in about 4 or 5 to a great deal . Firm the soil around the prow .
Water the cuttings well . you may cover the muckle to wield moisture as I do in this post .

Boxwood Propagation success
I have read that settle of the boxwood cuttings should only take about 3 or 4 week but for some cause , mine take longer .
But many do root . Look at those healthy roots !
In my TV , I share how I pot up this rooted boxwood cutting to originate on into a beautiful bush or shrub .

I am working also on starting a net ton of boxwood cuttings right away in my garden . I will be indisputable and share how that works out .
Have you ever depart Turkish boxwood cuttings ? What would you do other than ?
glad Gardening !
