As a general rule , I ’m always secret plan for anearly spring . Up here in northerly Wisconsin , it ’s possible for snowdrift to fall around into May . March and April can be a toss-up as far as temperature go .
Sometimes , a meek March baffle your promise up for an other give . Then April ( coke ) showers delay any thoughts of May flowers .
But even I will admit it ’s possible for give to get along too early . And when bounce murder unexpectedly soon , you have to be quick to accommodate to the conditions and change your plans every prison term the weather throws you a curveball .

One for the Books
Up here on my farm , the saltation of 2021 has been one of the most unusual I can remember . It actually come out with an abnormally mild wintertime . Aside from one short cold spell , temperatures ride out warmer than common , and comparatively little blow amass .
In many places , it never sustain more than a foot mystifying . This made it prosperous to maintain paths , trails and private road all over the farm .
Then March brought tender temperatures to the fold , and all the blow melt in the blink of an centre . It melt so fast , it seemed to evaporate rather than change state to meltwater . Ground conditions , in turning , were remarkably wry for the time of year .

“ Perfect , ” I said to myself . “ I ’ll fire up mygarden tractor , surcharge up a Plough , and go cleaning up branches and debris from winter ! ”

April Showers …
It was a good programme … in hypothesis . But early April bring sound rain to the fold .
I conjecture I should be grateful it was n’t snow . Around here , it ’s not uncommon for April to break leap by ditch one or two feet of snow in a individual storm . But since the temperatures were far too strong for snow , the precipitation fell as inch of pelting instead , sogging up the ground until I did n’t dare drive the garden tractor for fear ofrutting up the fieldsand / orgetting stuck in the mud .
“ No problem , ” I recount myself . “ I should prune my youngfruit treeswhile they ’re still sleeping . ”
I put on rubber boot , slog through the imbue - wet fields , and butt against up to the high ground of my woodlet . There , I detect that the support above - freezing temperatures had prompted my trees to throw caution to the wind . They adopted an “ early hiss catches the dirt ball ” mentality .
All the buds were intumesce , and leafing out seemed inevitable . So I quiet canceled my pruning plans .
Eventually , the ground start to dry out again , but by this time the smoke was growing so ambitiously it really needed to be mow . mow grass in April is much unheard of around here . But I tried ( once again ) to go with the flow and fire up my garden tractor for the time of year .
take more : Be careful where you put in your farm equipment over the winter !
Machine Woes
In the past , I have explained the grandness of parking machinery in suitable positioning during the fall , so they ’re easily accessible come bounce . But even best - put plan can go amiss on occasion .
The garden tractor was park in a garage bay , blocked by an agingfarm truck . Unfortunately , the farm hand truck ’s battery was too frail to start the engine , and that ’s when I give away that my battery charger had ( for no apparent reason ) stopped working .
Thus , truck and tractor both stayed put until I could purchase a new bombardment courser , and the weed rest untouched .
At this point , I could have changed train and used a utility tractor ( like mytrusty John Deere Model 40 ) to pull a wagon around and get some tree arm clean up . But no sooner had I shifted my focus from the garden tractor than temperatures plunged and a blizzard blew through . It dampened the ground again , slow the emergence of grass and tree diagram bud likewise .
May Flowers?
As I baby-sit indite this , I have to chortle at the unpredictable nature of early spring conditions . I ’ve in reality made a lot of advance in many centering . I ’ve done a lot of garden work , preppingraised bedsfor saltation planting . I ’ve weed and trimmed Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree around the farm .
And I even let the garden tractor going , after the new battery charger bring the farm truck back to life .
But I have n’t actually used the garden tractor yet . Because five days ago , there was a light snowstorm . And three years ago , freeze rain left the flat coat covered in frappe for most 24 hour .
Yesterday was vivid and sunny , true . But today it rained intemperately , and there ’s a spate of standing water in the study .
That ’s the nature of an early spring . The grass might be growing , the trees might be leafing out , and we might be pose a spate of spring work done . But March and April like to tease us , mixing their promises of strong temperature with the cold realism that it ’s still too early to count on consistent condition .
Unless you stay flexible , you ’ll drive yourself wild trying to outwit the wild atmospheric condition .
In the ending , I ’m still happy spring get ahead of time . But I ’ve unquestionably see enough of these April showers . Bring on the May flowers !
