Chilean rhubarb ( Gunnera tinctoria ) is a gargantuan perennial that is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 7 - 10 . It prefers damp , rich soil in full Lord’s Day or partial nicety . This plant certainly says “ WOW ! ” Its bold foliage , with leaf up to 6 feet across , has the grain of that of ( we can only imagine ) dinosaur skin . In fact , it ’s easy to visualise dinosaurs strolling amongst these plants as they head to a pool for a boozing of water . Gardeners in affectionate mood can grow this monster as a repeated , while northerly nurseryman are restricted to growing it in a commode to be over wintered indoors or building luxuriant systems to protect the crowns from cryptic freezes in winter . As marvellous as it it , the plant has become a troublesome invasive in section of Ireland and New Zealand . Eradicating it is not easy , due to its size of it and the ferocious spines on its stalk and leaf underside . It propagate by both seeds and rhizome .
